Prayer
Trained by burying bones and scattering ashes, unlocking 27 configured prayers plus blessed equipment, holy forges and the sceptre line.
Prayer gives you a pool of points and a book of prayers you switch on for as long as the points hold out. They raise melee, ranged, magic or defence, speed up health regeneration, or halve the damage one attack style does to you. Only one prayer of each kind runs at a time. The pool is 50 points at level 1 and gains one per level, reaching 169 at 120.
Level 1 to 120
Bones and ashes are the only repeatable source of Prayer XP, so progress is entirely about which corpses you can farm. Each type is worth a fixed amount, from 5 for plain bones up to 100 for infernal ashes. Three multipliers stack on top: using a bone on an altar imbues it for exactly double, burying it on a fire you lit adds up to another 90% depending on the log, and burying inside the Wilderness adds 10%.
- Bones from anything you kill 1 to 20
Chickens, rats, cows and goblins around Lumbridge all drop plain bones, worth 5 XP or 10 imbued. Imps drop cursed ashes at 8. This is the stretch you clear by simply never walking away from a corpse.
- Big bones from ogres and bears 15 to 40
Ogres in the Tree Gnome Village dungeon and Corsair Cove Cave always drop big bones and have very little health, which makes them the fastest bones per minute at this stage. Bears and grizzly bears drop them too. 10 XP each, 20 imbued.
- Large bones from yaks and trolls 20 to 45
Yaks on Neitiznot and mountain trolls on Death Plateau, in the Troll Stronghold and around Trollheim always drop large bones, again 10 XP and 20 imbued, on slower kills that pay better loot.
- Enormous bones from giants 30 to 60
Ice giants in the Ice Caves, moss giants in the Varrock Sewers and Taverley Dungeon, and fire giants in the Deserted Keep always drop enormous bones at 25 XP, or 50 imbued. Hill giants drop them only uncommonly, so leave them behind once you can handle moss giants.
- Ashes from demons 55 to 80
Greater demons and abyssal demons in the Slayer Tower, lesser demons in the Lava Maze and Mor Ul Rek, black demons in Taverley Dungeon and hellhounds in the God Wars Dungeon and on the Ice Path all always drop ashes. At 50 XP each, or 100 imbued, this is where Prayer starts moving.
- Dragon bones 70 to 90
Green dragons in the Wilderness are the classic run: 65 XP a bone, 130 imbued, and the Wilderness bonus applies right where you kill them. Blue dragons in the Ice Caves and skeletal wyverns work as well, and the King Black Dragon drops its bones already imbued and noted.
- Dagannoth bones and infernal ashes 85 to 120
The Dagannoth Kings always drop dagannoth bones at 90 XP, or 180 imbued. K'ril Tsutsaroth in the God Wars Dungeon drops infernal ashes at 100, or 200 imbued, the largest single bury in the game.
Keeping prayers running
An altar refills the pool completely, but only once every ten minutes; an altar in your own house cuts that wait to five. Prayer potions restore 30%, 45% and 60% at Herblore 20, 55 and 83, and the level 99 cape adds 15% on top of a potion.
Vestment robes, holy sandals and a Neitiznot helm each cut drain by 10%, while monk robes and blessed dragonhide raise the size of the pool instead. Protection prayers halve incoming damage from one style, though only a quarter of it comes off against another player.
Prayer sceptres
The silver sceptre at 30, gold at 44 and royal at 60 hold three, five and six prayers on a bar, and flip one, two or three of them on at once as quick prayers, so you never open the book mid fight. They run on charges and are recharged at the Holy Forge.
Silver and gold are forged at that same Holy Forge, deep in the Experiments Cave, from 300 bars of the matching metal plus a holy relic and a piece of sacred wood, both very rare drops from the experiments themselves. Experiments part 1 opens the forge, asks for Prayer 43 and pays 15,000 Prayer XP on the spot. The royal sceptre comes from elite clue scrolls instead.
Worth knowing
- Use every bone on an altar before you bury it. The imbued version is worth exactly double and imbuing costs nothing but a click.
- Light a fire from the best logs you own and bury on it. The bonus follows the log's Firemaking level, so a sakura fire nearly doubles the XP again while an oak fire barely moves it.
- The imbue, the fire and the Wilderness bonus all stack, so a bone buried properly is worth roughly four times the same bone dropped where it fell.
- Points come back on their own at about 2.5 a minute, which is nothing. Plan your trips around altars and prayer potions instead.

Prayers
27Toggled from the prayer book and drained while active, so the point cost per tick is what decides how long you can hold one.
